Change video speed slow motion or time-lapse

Stretch a moment out at 0.25x, or race through a long take at 4x. Voices keep their normal pitch instead of turning into chipmunks, and the new length is shown before you export.

Change video speed in your browser

Speed changes how a clip feels. Slowing footage down draws attention to a detail that passed too quickly; speeding it up turns a long, static take into something watchable. Pick a multiplier and the preview plays at that speed straight away.

How to change speed online

  1. Open your video

Drop in the clip you want to retime.

  2. Pick a speed

From 0.25x for strong slow motion up to 4x for a time-lapse. 1x returns to normal.

  3. Check the new length

The panel shows what the clip will run to at that speed, so you can fit a time limit.

  4. Export

The exported file plays at the new speed everywhere, with no player settings needed.

Audio that still sounds like a voice

Naive speed changes shift the pitch, which makes speech unusable. Playback here preserves pitch, so a clip at 1.5x sounds like someone talking briskly rather than a cartoon. If you only want the picture, mute the clip in the Audio tool.

Speeding up shortens the export too

Because exporting replays the clip in real time, a faster clip finishes sooner. A 60-second take exported at 2x takes about 30 seconds to write.

Your video never leaves your device

Most online video editors upload your file to their servers before you can touch it. This one works differently: every edit and every export happens inside your browser, on your own hardware.

Retiming is the most demanding edit here, because every frame has to be replayed and recorded at the new rate. On a server that is billed time; on your own device it is just your device, working for as long as the clip needs.

That work happens locally, which is why a slowed clip takes longer to export than a sped-up one. Nothing is queued behind other people’s jobs, because there is no queue.

Change speed — questions and answers

Does changing the speed change how long the export takes?

Yes, and it is the one tool where that is true. The editor records the clip as it plays, so a video sped up to 2x finishes in half the time, while slowing one to 0.5x takes twice as long as the original. Slow-motion exports are the slowest on the site.

Will the voices sound like chipmunks?

No. The pitch is held steady while the speed changes, so a sped-up voice sounds quick rather than squeaky and a slowed one sounds deliberate rather than growling.

What speeds can I choose?

Anywhere from 0.25x, which stretches a moment out to four times its length, up to 4x for racing through a long take. The new clip length is shown before you export so there are no surprises.

Why does my slow motion look juddery?

Slowing a clip down does not create new frames — it holds each existing one for longer. Footage shot at 30fps and slowed to 0.25x shows each frame four times, which reads as judder. Filming at 60fps or higher gives much smoother slow motion.

Which files can I retime?

Any video your browser can play, including MP4 (H.264), WebM and most phone MOV files. You choose MP4 or WebM for the export.

Is my video uploaded to change its speed?

No. The retiming happens in your browser and the file stays on your device.

Does slowing a video down make it smooth?

Slow motion looks smoothest when the source was filmed at a high frame rate. Slowing standard 30fps footage to 0.25x will show each frame four times, which can look stepped.

Can I change speed for only part of the clip?

The speed applies to the whole clip. To retime one section, trim to that section, export it at the speed you want, and join it back to the rest.
