Mute video or change its volume in your browser
Sometimes the audio is the problem: wind noise, a conversation you would rather not publish, or music you cannot use. Muting removes the audio track from the exported file completely, rather than just turning it down.
How to mute video online
Open your video
Drop in the clip and switch to the Audio tool.
Mute or adjust
Tick Remove sound to silence it, or drag the volume slider between 0% and 200%.
Listen back
Press play to hear the result at the level you picked before committing.
Export
A muted export contains no audio track at all, which also makes the file smaller.
Muting versus turning the volume to zero
Ticking Remove sound leaves the audio track out of the exported file entirely. That is cleaner than a silent track: the file is smaller, and nothing can be recovered from it.
Making a quiet recording usable
The volume slider goes to 200%, which is often enough to rescue a clip recorded too far from the microphone. Bear in mind that raising the volume raises the background noise with it, so listen back before exporting.
Your video never leaves your device
Most online video editors upload your file to their servers before you can touch it. This one works differently: every edit and every export happens inside your browser, on your own hardware.
Muting is usually about something in the background you would rather nobody heard — a conversation, a television, a name. Uploading that audio to a server so it can be removed is precisely the wrong order of events.
Here the sound never goes anywhere. Your browser re-levels or silences the track and writes a new file locally, so the audio you wanted gone was never transmitted at all.
Mute video — questions and answers
Can I turn the volume down instead of removing it?
Yes. The volume runs from silent all the way up to 200%, so you can soften background noise instead of cutting it, or rescue a recording that came out too quiet.
Does muting reduce the picture quality?
The picture is re-encoded on export, as it is for every tool here, so choose Best quality and the original resolution to stay closest to the source. Removing the sound itself does nothing to the image.
Can I mute only part of the clip?
The volume applies to the whole clip. To silence one section, trim the clip to that section and export it muted, then export the rest at normal volume.
Why would I push the volume above 100%?
Phone microphones often record speech far too quietly, especially outdoors. Pushing to 150% or 200% can make a quiet recording usable, though it lifts the background hiss along with the voice.
Which files can I mute?
Any video your browser can play. The finished clip is saved as MP4 or WebM, your choice, with the audio track silenced or re-levelled.
Is my video uploaded to mute it?
No. The audio is re-levelled inside your browser and the file stays on your device.
Can I replace the audio with my own music?
Not at the moment. You can remove the existing sound here and add music in the app you publish with, most of which offer their own music library.
