Convert video to MP4 in your browser
Turn a WebM, MOV or MKV file into an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound — the combination phones, TVs, Windows, Mac and every social site accept. No upload and no watermark.
MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound is the closest thing video has to a universal format. If a file will not play on someone’s phone, will not import into an editor, or gets refused by an upload form, converting it to MP4 is usually the fix.
How to convert to mp4 online
Open your video
Drop in the WebM, MOV, MKV or other file. If your browser can play it, it can be converted.
Check the format
MP4 is already selected under Convert. You can also choose WebM, or GIF for a short animation.
Edit if you like
Trim, crop or compress in the same pass. Every edit is applied in the one export.
Export
The MP4 downloads with its index at the start, so it begins playing straight away wherever you open it.
What actually changes
Converting re-encodes the picture as H.264 and the sound as AAC, inside an MP4 container. The file’s index is written at the front rather than the end, which is what lets a player or a website start playing it before it has finished loading. Picture, length and sound stay as they were.
Which files can be converted
Anything your browser can play. Chrome and Edge open MP4, MOV, WebM and most MKV files holding H.264 or VP9. HEVC (H.265) videos open on computers whose hardware supports HEVC, which covers most recent Windows PCs and Macs. If a file will not open, the browser cannot decode it, and no browser tool will convert it.
Your video never leaves your device
Most online video editors upload your file to their servers before you can touch it. This one works differently: every edit and every export happens inside your browser, on your own hardware.
Conversion is often needed for exactly the files you would not hand to a stranger: a recording from a meeting, a home video, a clip from a phone you are about to wipe.
Your browser converts the file locally. There is no upload, no server copy and nothing to delete afterwards.
Convert to MP4 — questions and answers
Which formats can I convert to MP4?
Any video your browser can play: WebM, MOV, MKV, M4V and MP4 itself. Chrome and Edge open the widest range.
Will converting lose quality?
Converting re-encodes the video, so it is never bit-for-bit identical. At High or Best quality and the original resolution the difference is not visible in normal viewing.
Can I convert to WebM or GIF instead?
Yes. The Convert tool offers MP4, WebM and GIF. GIF suits short, silent loops; MP4 is the right choice for anything else.
Can I convert MKV to MP4?
Yes, if your browser can play the MKV. Chrome and Edge play MKV files holding H.264 or VP9 video; an MKV with a codec the browser does not support will not open.
Is my video uploaded to convert it?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser and the file never leaves your device.
Can I make the MP4 smaller while converting?
Yes. Open the Compress tool and pick a target size; the conversion and the compression happen in the same export.
