Reverse a video in your browser

Water flowing uphill, a jump in reverse, a mess un-making itself. Play any clip backwards — sound included — and slow it down for extra effect.

Reversing is one of the oldest tricks in video and still one of the most watchable. Splashes, jumps, falling objects and anything poured or thrown look strange and satisfying backwards. Trim to the moment, tick Reverse and export.

How to reverse video online

  1. Open your video

Drop in the clip you want to play backwards.

  2. Trim to the moment

Keep only the section worth reversing. Short clips of three to ten seconds work best.

  3. Check Reverse

On this page Play backwards is already ticked in the Speed tool. Add slow motion there too if you like.

  4. Export

The finished video plays backwards from your end point to your start point, with the sound reversed too.

Why reversing takes a little longer

Video is stored so that each frame depends on the ones before it, which means it can only be decoded forwards. To play it backwards, the editor reads the clip in short sections starting from the end and puts their frames in reverse order. Expect an export to take a little longer than the clip itself.

Reverse plus slow motion

Reversed clips are even stranger slowed down. Pick 0.5× or 0.25× in Speed with Reverse ticked and both happen in the same export. Slow motion works best with footage filmed at 60 frames per second or more, which keeps the movement smooth.

Your video never leaves your device

Most online video editors upload your file to their servers before you can touch it. This one works differently: every edit and every export happens inside your browser, on your own hardware.

Fun edits are usually made from personal clips — friends, pets, kids, holidays — which are exactly the files that should stay off strangers’ servers.

Your browser reverses the clip on your own device and saves the result locally. Nothing is uploaded.

Reverse video — questions and answers

Is the sound reversed too?

Yes. The sound plays backwards along with the picture. Tick Remove sound in Audio, or add music, if you would rather not hear it.

Can I reverse and slow down at the same time?

Yes. Choose a speed in the Speed tool with Play backwards ticked; both are applied in one export.

Why does the preview play forwards?

The preview plays your clip normally so you can trim and edit it. The reversal is applied when you export.

Can I make a boomerang?

Export the reversed clip first. Then open the original clip, add the reversed file in Merge, and export again for a forwards-then-backwards loop.

Is my video uploaded to reverse it?

No. It is reversed by your own browser and never leaves your device.

Which browsers can reverse video?

Reversing uses your browser’s built-in video encoder, available in recent Chrome, Edge and Safari. Older browsers show a message instead.

What kind of clips look best reversed?

Anything with clear, one-way movement: water splashing or pouring, someone jumping into a pool, a ball being thrown, smoke, a building being demolished, food being eaten. Clips of people talking or walking look odd but less striking. Keep the camera steady, so the reversed motion is the only thing that moves.
