Fade video in and out in your browser

Fade up from black at the start and down to black at the end, with the sound easing in and out alongside. Set each fade to the tenth of a second.

A hard cut at the very first or last frame makes a video feel unfinished. A short fade — half a second to two seconds — is what makes a clip feel edited, and it hides the jolt of music or sound starting and stopping abruptly.

How to fade in & out online

  1. Open your video

Drop in your clip and trim it if needed.

  2. Set the fades

In the Fade tool, drag Fade in and Fade out to the length you want, from 0.1 to 5 seconds.

  3. Choose the sound

Leave "Fade the sound too" ticked to fade the audio and music with the picture.

  4. Export

The fades are written into the video you download.

How long a fade should be

Half a second to one second suits most clips; it softens the edges without stealing time. Two to three seconds feels deliberate, and works at the end of a film or a music video. Five seconds is a slow, dramatic fade.

Fades with music and merged clips

Fades apply to the whole exported video, so with merged clips the fade-in happens at the start of the first and the fade-out at the end of the last. Music added in the Music tool fades too, so a song that runs longer than the video ends smoothly instead of being cut mid-note.

0 bytes uploaded

Your video never leaves your device

Most online video editors upload your file to their servers before you can touch it. This one works differently: every edit and every export happens inside your browser, on your own hardware.

Fades are a finishing touch, so the clip is usually ready to share — but sharing should be your decision, not a side effect of editing.

The fades are drawn by your own browser and the finished file is saved on your device. Nothing is uploaded at any point.

Fade in & out — questions and answers

Does the sound fade too?

Yes, as long as "Fade the sound too" is ticked. Both the video’s own sound and any added music fade with the picture.

Can I fade to white instead of black?

Fades go to black at the moment, which is the standard for film and video.

Can I add only a fade out?

Yes. Leave Fade in at 0 and set only Fade out, or the other way round.

Do fades work with merged clips?

Yes. The fade in plays at the start of the first clip and the fade out at the end of the last one.

Is my video uploaded to add fades?

No. The fades are applied by your browser and the video stays on your device.

Can I fade between merged clips?

Not yet. The fade in and fade out apply to the beginning and end of the whole video.

Should I fade in at the start of a social media clip?

Usually not, or only briefly. On TikTok, Reels and Shorts the first second decides whether someone keeps watching, so a long fade from black can cost you viewers. Keep any fade in under half a second there, and save longer fades for the ending, or for films, slideshows and music videos.
