Make a GIF from a video in your browser
Cut a moment out of any clip and save it as a GIF that loops forever. Add a caption, crop it square, slow it down — all in the browser, with no watermark.
A GIF is the most portable kind of moving picture: it plays automatically, loops forever and works in chats, forums and emails that will not show a video. The catch is size, so the trick is choosing a short moment and a sensible width. This tool keeps both front and centre.
How to video to gif online
Open your video
Drop in any clip your browser can play.
Trim to the moment
Drag the handles around the few seconds you want. Three to ten seconds is the sweet spot for a GIF.
Choose size and speed
GIF is selected under Convert. Pick a width of 320, 480, 640 or 800 pixels and 10, 15 or 20 frames per second. The estimated size updates as you choose.
Make the GIF
Press Make GIF. It loops forever, or plays once if you choose, and downloads straight to your device.
Why GIFs get big, and how to keep them small
A GIF stores every frame as a picture limited to 256 colours, so its size grows with width, frame rate and length all at once. Halving the width cuts the file to about a quarter. For a reaction or a quick loop, 480 pixels at 15 frames per second looks smooth and stays small enough for chats.
Captions, crops and slow motion
Every editing tool works on a GIF too. Add a caption with Text, crop to a square for social feeds, slow a moment down with Speed, or play it backwards. The GIF comes out exactly as the preview shows it.
Your video never leaves your device
Most online video editors upload your file to their servers before you can touch it. This one works differently: every edit and every export happens inside your browser, on your own hardware.
GIFs are often made from clips you would never post whole — a moment from a call, a family video, something from a group chat.
Only the GIF you download exists outside your device, and only because you saved it. The original is never uploaded.
Video to GIF — questions and answers
How long can the GIF be?
Up to 60 seconds. GIFs grow quickly because every frame is stored as an image, so 3 to 10 seconds is the practical range for sharing.
Which width should I choose?
480 pixels suits chats and most websites. Pick 320 for the smallest file, or 640 or 800 when the detail matters more than the size.
Does the GIF loop?
Yes, it loops forever by default, which is what chats and websites expect. Choose Once under Play for a GIF that stops on its last frame.
Can I add text to the GIF?
Yes. Use the Text tool before you make the GIF; the caption is drawn into every frame.
Why does the GIF look grainier than the video?
GIFs can only use 256 colours per image. A light pattern is added to smooth gradients, which keeps skies and skin from banding but can look slightly grainy up close.
Is my video uploaded to make the GIF?
No. The GIF is built inside your browser and the video never leaves your device.
Can I make a GIF with sound?
No format called GIF can carry sound. If you need sound, export a short MP4 instead; most chats play MP4 inline just like a GIF.
