Convert MOV to MP4 in your browser

iPhone recordings and QuickTime exports are MOV files, which some Windows apps, Android phones and upload forms refuse. Convert them to MP4 here without sending them anywhere.

MOV is Apple’s QuickTime format. It is what an iPhone saves when you AirDrop or export a video, and what QuickTime and Final Cut write by default. Apple devices play it without a second thought; plenty of other software does not. MP4 removes the guesswork.

How to mov to mp4 online

  1. Open the MOV file

Drop it onto the editor. AirDropped iPhone videos and QuickTime exports both open directly.

  2. Keep MP4 selected

The Convert tool is set to MP4 already, with H.264 video and AAC sound.

  3. Fix anything else

Rotate a sideways recording, trim the ends or compress it in the same export.

  4. Export

The MP4 downloads to your device, ready for Windows, Android, email or any website.

Why some MOV files will not play

A MOV file is a container, and what is inside varies. Older iPhones and most cameras record H.264, which almost everything can decode. Newer iPhones record HEVC (H.265) by default, which saves space but is not supported everywhere. Converting to MP4 rewrites the video as H.264, which plays anywhere.

iPhone videos and HEVC

Chrome and Edge open HEVC videos on computers whose hardware can decode them, which covers most Windows PCs and Macs from the last few years. If an iPhone video will not open here, that is the cause. For future recordings, Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible makes the iPhone record H.264 instead.

Your video never leaves your device

Most online video editors upload your file to their servers before you can touch it. This one works differently: every edit and every export happens inside your browser, on your own hardware.

Most MOV files come straight off a phone, which makes them personal by default: family, friends, home, places you go.

This converter works on your device. The video is read and rewritten by your browser and is never transmitted.

MOV to MP4 — questions and answers

Why won’t my MOV file play on Windows or Android?

Usually because it holds HEVC (H.265) video, which some players and phones cannot decode. Converting to MP4 re-encodes it as H.264, which plays everywhere.

Can I convert iPhone videos?

Yes. iPhone videos open in Chrome and Edge on computers with HEVC support, which covers most recent PCs and Macs. Once open, they convert like any other file.

Is the sound kept?

Yes. The sound is saved as AAC in the MP4, at the volume you set in the Audio tool. Untick nothing and it comes across as it was.

Does converting keep the quality?

At High or Best quality and the original resolution, the converted file looks the same in normal viewing. Choose Standard or a target size in Compress if a smaller file matters more.

Is my MOV file uploaded?

No. It is converted inside your browser and never leaves your device.

My iPhone video is sideways after converting. Why?

iPhones store rotation as a flag, and some players ignore it. Use the Rotate tool before exporting; the rotation is then written into the picture itself.
